The B.C. Federation of Labour passed the following emergency resolution today at its annual convention, offering support for Social Justice 12 and blasting the Abbotsford board of education. The resolution states:

BECAUSE the Abbotsford School Board has demonstrated homophobic and transphobia behaviour by preventing the instruction of the Ministry of Education approved Social Justice 12 course in its schools by explicitly banning course content on sexual orientation and gender identity issues, and

BECAUSE Abbotsford students are demanding the offering of the Social Justice 12 elective course and are organizing a rally on December 6th 2008, and

BECAUSE the BC Teachers’ Federation fully supportfs the offering of the Social Justice 12 course in all secondary schools in British Columbia

THEREFORE the British Columbia Federation of Labour will reaffirm its solidarity with the gay, lesbian, bisexual, transgender, two spirit and queer (LGBTQ) communities,

AND BE IT RESOLVED that we express our full support for the students and teachers of Abbotsford and for the teaching of the Social Justice 12 course in all secondary schools in BC.
