Concerned educator describes BC offshore school in China

Via Janet Steffenhagen:

- Has no library. (“When inspectors are present, the school has a staff member sit at a desk equipped with an unplugged computer monitor to give the impression that she is stationed at the entrance to a non-existent library.”)

- Requires teachers to provide texts and other materials at their own expense. (“There are courses with no support materials whatsoever.”)

- Does not screen students for any level of English proficiency. (“Teachers do their best to tailor classes to the needs of their students but the need is simply beyond using creative methodologies when there is virtually no English-language comprension.”)

- Is partnered with a Chinese school that promotes political indoctrination. (“After incidents in Tibet in March, students attended an assembly during which they were ‘taught’ that Western media bias distorts perceptions of Tibet … and were encouraged to ‘educate’ foreigners on the ‘real’ situation in Tibet.”)

- Lacks any physical education equipment or a gym.

- Employs only a few BC-certified teachers. (“While such certification is not a requirement for teaching at a BC offshore school, … the school misleadingly advertises ‘BC teachers’ when they are in fact a minority.”

- Pays teachers in cash without any receipt or acknowledgement of any tax payment to the Chinese government.
